Why we picked it

WordCraft rebuilds Microsoft Word's workflow as a fast, native, open source app: the ribbon, styles, tables, track changes, references and mail merge, reading and writing real .docx files. It also opens and exports many other formats, including PDF. It's free under MIT or Apache 2.0 and still in alpha, so keep important documents backed up while you try it.

About WordCraft

WordCraft is a free, open source word processor from the ArtCraft team, built to work like Microsoft Word. It has Word's ribbon, styles gallery and keyboard shortcuts, and it reads and writes .docx files. It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, and in a web browser.

What it can do

  • Familiar from the first keystroke. Word's ribbon tabs, shortcuts and behaviour: Enter continues a list, Tab indents it, and the Styles gallery previews styles live.
  • Real Word files. Opens and saves .docx, and also works with .odt, .rtf, HTML, Markdown, LaTeX and plain text. It opens old .doc files and exports PDF.
  • Everything for long documents. Styles, tables, headers and footers, footnotes, references and a table of contents.
  • Review together. Track changes and comments for editing with others.
  • Mail merge. Send personalised letters from one template.
  • Conversions from the command line. Turn a .docx into PDF, Markdown, HTML and more with one command.
  • Works with AI assistants. Add it to Claude Code with one command and an assistant can read, write and edit documents through MCP.

Part of the Crafting Apps

WordCraft is one of the Crafting Apps, a family of free, open source creative and office apps from ArtCraft, each a clean-room rebuild of a well-known paid app written from scratch in Rust. The best known is PhotoCraft, a Photoshop-style photo editor. They share the same approach: familiar menus and shortcuts, fast native apps on every major system, a version that runs in your browser, and commands an AI assistant can drive.

WordCraft, LibreOffice Writer, ONLYOFFICE Docs or Microsoft Word?

All four are word processors. The difference is how familiar they feel, how mature they are, and what they cost.

How to get it

  • Easiest: download it from the WordCraft page on getartcraft.com, or from the latest release on GitHub.
  • Every system: installers for Mac (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows (including ARM), Linux (AppImage, Flatpak, .deb, .rpm) and FreeBSD.
  • In a browser: a web version runs the whole app in a modern browser, and you can host it yourself.
  • For scripts and AI assistants: the wordcraft-cli tool runs the same commands without opening the app and includes an MCP server.

Good to know

  • Alpha. WordCraft is in alpha. It already has commands for 88% of Word's ribbon, and its team estimates it's about 60% of the way to replacing Word for real work. These are the team's own estimates; nobody has tested them independently yet.
  • Changing very fast. New versions arrive every few days, so expect bugs and update often.
  • Built with AI help. The ArtCraft team uses AI coding agents heavily, which is how so much appeared so quickly. Test it on your own files before you rely on it.
  • No Microsoft code. It's a clean-room rebuild, written from public file specifications and by observing how Word behaves, not from Microsoft's code.
  • Licence: MIT or Apache 2.0, your choice. Free to use, including at work. The ArtCraft and WordCraft names and logos have their own, stricter terms.

What you can build with it

  • Writing letters, reports and essays without a Microsoft 365 subscription
  • Opening and editing .docx files someone sent you
  • Reviewing documents with track changes and comments
  • Converting documents between Word, PDF, Markdown and other formats
  • Letting an AI assistant draft or edit documents through MCP
