About Us
Opensrcs helps you find the open source pieces for whatever you're building next. It's a hand-picked directory of trusted open source projects on GitHub, broken down into building blocks you can reuse, with every licence explained in plain English. Pick the parts, check what you're allowed to do with them, and hand your AI assistant a plan built from projects you can trust.
Why we built it
There are millions of repositories on GitHub. Finding the few that are well made, actively maintained and safe to build a product on takes hours: comparing stars, digging through issues, and working out what a licence actually lets you do. AI coding tools make it faster to build, but they happily suggest packages that are abandoned, or whose licence doesn't fit what you're making.
Opensrcs does that checking for you, so you can spend your time building instead of researching.
What you can do here
- Browse by category and topic. Filter by what the project does and the licence you need, then sort by stars or recent activity.
- See the building blocks. Big projects are made of parts you can use on their own, such as an auth server, a UI kit or a search engine. Each part shows its own licence and how much effort it takes to add.
- Understand the licence. Every project and part explains in plain words what you may do: use it commercially, keep your code private, host it for others. "Check for my project" then tells you whether it fits your situation.
- Build a stack. Pick parts from a project and the projects that work well with it. We check their licences together and write a prompt your AI assistant can follow.
- Start from an idea. Describe what you want to build, by typing or out loud (voice runs entirely in your browser). We turn it into a prompt that has your own AI assistant plan it from open source parts, with the licences checked.
- Bring Opensrcs into your AI tool. With the Opensrcs MCP, Claude, Cursor, Grok and Codex can search the directory and check licences for you while you work. It's part of Pro.
- Keep up. News covers what's changing in the projects we list, and Top Picks highlights what's worth a look each day and week.
How we pick projects
Every project is chosen by a person, not an algorithm. We look for:
- a public GitHub repository with an open source licence;
- active maintenance, with recent commits and releases;
- clear documentation and a real community behind it;
- something genuinely useful as a building block for other products.
We're adding a short Why we picked it note to every project page, and each project's GitHub details (stars, forks, open issues, last commit) come straight from GitHub, so you can see at a glance whether it's still alive. Anyone can suggest a project; we review every submission by hand.
