Why we picked it

FigCraft rebuilds Figma's design workflow as a native, open source app that keeps your files on your own computer: frames, auto layout, components and variants, variables, prototyping and a Dev Mode that turns components into React code. It's free under MIT or Apache 2.0, but it's the newest Crafting App, started in October 2026, with multiplayer still a preview.

About FigCraft

FigCraft is a free, open source interface design and prototyping app from the ArtCraft team, built to work like Figma. You design screens with frames, auto layout and components, wire them into prototypes and hand them to developers. Unlike Figma, your files are plain files on your own disk. It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and in a web browser.

What it can do

  • Figma's building blocks. Frames, auto layout, components and variants, vector networks, styles and variables.
  • Prototypes. Connections, transitions, back actions and flows you can click through.
  • Dev Mode. Ready-for-dev status, annotations and React code where component properties become props.
  • Your files, your disk. Designs are .figcraft files on your computer. No account and no tracking; nothing leaves unless you share it.
  • Imports. SVG, PNG, JPG, WebP and PDF in and out, and Figma .fig files open on a best-effort basis.
  • Works with AI assistants. A command-line tool and MCP server let an assistant build screens and components.

Part of the Crafting Apps

FigCraft is one of the Crafting Apps, a family of free, open source creative and office apps from ArtCraft, each a clean-room rebuild of a well-known paid app written from scratch in Rust. The best known is PhotoCraft, a Photoshop-style photo editor. They share the same approach: familiar menus and shortcuts, fast native apps on every major system, a version that runs in your browser, and commands an AI assistant can drive.

FigCraft, Penpot or Figma?

All three design interfaces. The difference is where your files live, how mature they are, and what they cost.

How to get it

  • Easiest: download it from the FigCraft page on getartcraft.com, or from the latest release on GitHub.
  • Every system: installers for Mac (Apple silicon and Intel), Windows (including ARM), Linux (AppImage, Flatpak, .deb, .rpm) and FreeBSD.
  • In a browser: a web version runs the whole app in a modern browser, and you can host it yourself.
  • For scripts and AI assistants: the figcraft-cli tool runs the same commands without opening the app and includes an MCP server.

Good to know

  • Alpha. FigCraft is in alpha. Its team estimates it's about 49% of the way to replacing Figma for real work. Figma files open only on a best-effort basis, and multiplayer editing is a first preview. These are the team's own estimates; nobody has tested them independently yet.
  • Changing very fast. New versions arrive every few days, so expect bugs and update often.
  • Built with AI help. The ArtCraft team uses AI coding agents heavily, which is how so much appeared so quickly. Test it on your own files before you rely on it.
  • No Figma code. It's a clean-room rebuild, written from public file specifications and by observing how Figma behaves, not from Figma's code.
  • Licence: MIT or Apache 2.0, your choice. Free to use, including at work. The ArtCraft and FigCraft names and logos have their own, stricter terms.

What you can build with it

  • Designing app and website screens without a Figma subscription
  • Building a design system with components and variables
  • Clickable prototypes of an app idea
  • Handing designs to developers with Dev Mode and React code
  • Letting an AI assistant design screens through MCP

Building blocks

FigCraft is made of parts you can use on their own in your project. Copy a prompt to have your AI assistant add one for you, and see the licence card for what you may do with them.
